A Message to the Voters of Costilla County

Dear Fellow Citizens of Costilla County,

I am writing first to thank everyone who participated in the caucuses and county assembly.
Your willingness to be involved, listen carefully, and weigh the future of our county is an
important act of public service. The people who step forward to serve as delegates help
strengthen local government, and I sincerely appreciate the time, thought, and commitment
you brought to that process.

I also want to share a personal update about my campaign for District 2 County Commissioner.
Since retiring in 2022, I have been caring for my mother, who is 96 and will turn 97 in June. In
March of this year, she suffered a serious reaction to medication she was taking during cancer
treatment. Helping her recover required many medical appointments and much of my time and
attention. That responsibility limited how much campaigning I was able to do over the past
several weeks, but I believe it was the right thing to do. I am grateful to say she is now
recovering well, and I am once again able to devote more time to meeting voters and talking
about the future of Costilla County.

myself, hear your concerns, and earn your support. I know many people in our county value
meeting a candidate personally before making a decision, and I respect that. I will continue
reaching out across the district as much as I can, and I invite you to reach out to me as well.

One of the most urgent issues facing Costilla County is the lack of a functioning county jail.
This problem affects public safety, county finances, and the daily work of law enforcement. Too
much of the county’s budget is being used to transport and house prisoners outside the county,
and too much deputy time is being spent on the road instead of protecting our communities. If
elected, I plan to work aggressively to identify grants, loans, and other funding opportunities
that can help us address this challenge. I believe solving this issue is essential if we want to
make meaningful progress in other areas of county government.

Another priority for me is making county government more transparent, more accessible, and
more responsive to the people it serves. Rebuilding trust begins with better communication
between residents and elected officials. I believe we should create practical ways for citizens
to share concerns, ideas, and feedback—through a simple electronic suggestion system, a
more user-friendly county website, and regular public updates through newsletters or other
community communications. At the same time, we must remember that not everyone relies on
technology, so traditional options such as mailed or hand-delivered letters must remain
available. Good government depends on citizens feeling informed, included, and heard.

These are only some of the priorities I am focused on as I continue learning more about the
needs of our county. I am also exploring additional funding sources, community development
opportunities, cultural and historical projects, and stronger partnerships with the community
organizations already working hard on behalf of local residents. If you would like to learn more
